Of
the approximately 53,000 fires that
occur in New York State annually,
more than 10 percent of them were
of an electrical nature. In fact,
electrical fires are among the leading
causes of property damage in the United
States today.
The
New York Board's Electrical Bureau
was originally formed in 1881 to provide
electrical safety through the inspection
of electrical systems involving new
construction and alterations.

|
The
Board acts as the official electrical
inspection agency for more than
900 municipalities throughout
the state, providing uniformity
between varying codes and local
interpretations of the codes.
The
Board has a staff of over 100
full-time electrical inspectors
who perform over 300,000 electrical
inspections and 15,000 reinspections
annually. Typically, the Board
finds that 25 percent of all
inspections conducted result
in code deficiencies.
To reduce code deficiencies,
the Electrical Bureau developed
a reinspection program. Utilized
by both municipalities and private
organizations, the program examines
the condition and maintanance
of a building's electricalsystem,
including safety and code compliance.
The Electical Bureau also participates
in the uniform interpretation
of the National Electrical Code
andserves on various code-making
and technical committiees with
such organizations as the National
Fire Protection Association,
the International Association
of Electrical Inspectors and
